A School Counselor is here to help students achieve their greatest potential academically, socially and emotionally by developing a comprehensive guidance plan based on the NC Guidance Curriculum and American School Counseling Association's (ASCA) National Model. Classroom guidance lessons, individual counseling, small group counseling, and parent consultation are some of the main interventions used by a School Counselor. Below these interventions are detailed.
Small Group CounselingThroughout the school year we facilitate several small groups based on need. Topics include, but are not limited to:
*Emotion Management (stress, anxiety, anger) *Family Change *Social Skills *Friendship *Study Skills *Appropriate School Behavior |
Individual CounselingIndividual counseling is provided to students on a short-term basis based on specific needs. Parental permission is obtained prior to any extended individual or group counseling. Students are seen by the counselor when:
*Parents request and indicate a need and desire that the counselor meet with their children *Students request counseling *Teachers, administrators or other school staff refer the student |
Classroom LessonsIn addition to individual and group counseling, we also reach students through classroom guidance. In being a part of Wakelon Elementary’s specials rotation schedule, we teach approximately two classes daily at the K-5 grade levels. We use the research-based violence prevention kit, Second Step, as well as the Steps to Respect Program and other various books and tools to guide our lessons. We also deliver Character Education lessons each month in every classroom K-5.

Parent ConsultationWe are available to meet with parents individually and/or for parent/teacher conferences. Parents can call or email to set up appointments with us. We can also help with making outside referrals and provide tutoring lists for outside academic support.

Wakelon's Schoolwide Programs
Wakelon Elementary is involved in the Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) program, which aligns with our Character Education Program. Each month students are awarded the "Character Education Award" certificates, based on the how well they demonstrated that particular month's character trait. (Read more about the traits in the Character Education section of this website!). Furthermore, individual students can earn "bucks" for positive behavior. The accumulation of bucks are rewarded in various ways from being able to shop in the school store to being able to participate in quarterly PBIS celebrations. These celebrations have criteria for each celebration and change for each quarter.
